Le Mans 2022 Ayse's Story

Page 23 - Sunday 12th June - The Night is Over (But There's Always Breakfast....)

We agreed to meet back outside at 9 am, which gave us plenty of time to have a shower and change - but not to fall asleep (as that would have been fatal).  We made the (very easy) decision to head out to Arnage again, not to the circuit but to Le Feuilette for a spot of breakfast.  Feeling as tired as we did, the coffee was a wonderful tonic.....  After that, we arrived back in Parking Blanc at around 11.45.  We were a little surprised to James F's car there and not only because he was parked in my spot...  Fortunately his space was still free so we parked there instead.  Bicycle man came over to check and I managed to explain that we had inadvertently swapped our parking spaces.  I had expected a long debate over this, but he wandered off, perfectly content....

This was the first sign we had through the whole of the weekend that James F had made it in to the race, so we assumed that he was at least feeling well enough to do that.  Unfortunately he hadn't taken part in any of the communications on the Team DoT Whatsapp group since one brief note on Saturday morning before we all left for the circuit despite being able to see them all, so we had no idea where he was or how he was getting on.  Despite setting the group up before the race in 2019, it really hadn't been as successful as I'd hoped when I did it.  Our little 'sub-groups' had already become somewhat fragmented by 2018 and sadly this initiative didn't solve the issue.  We did have to communicate with James F though as we noticed that he had left his car window wide open.  James sent him a message on the group which he quickly replied to.

We made our way back to T17 where I shot a few more photos and some more video.  This was by now no more than an attempt to keep myself awake and sadly that didn't always work!

I took a few photographs from the grandstand but in time-honoured fashion I was struggling having had no meaningful sleep since I woke up on Saturday morning.  James took great delight in capturing one of my nodding dog moments!

So, the end of the race arrived with a wholly predictable 1-2 finish for Toyota, with Glickenhaus picking up 3rd and 4th, albeit 5 and 10 laps behind.  Jota finished 1st and 3rd in LMP2 and Porsche #91 took victory in GTEPro, leading home the two AF Corse Ferraris.  The TF Sport Aston Martin took the win in GTEAm.

We were quickly away from the circuit after the finish of the race and I dealt well with the challenge to stay awake all the way back to base!

That evening, if memory serves me right, we took dinner at the Old Wild West, but sadly there are no snaps to prove it....!   Then it was back to our beds for some very well-earned shuteye.
