Le Mans 2022 Ayse's Story

Page 22 - Sunday 12th June - Mulsanne Corner (New and Improved!)

Once again, I've no specific recollection of when we left Indianapolis, but I do know that sitting in the chairs in the pre-dawn cold was beginning to get to all of us.  We needed to get up and move around a little to get some circulation back.  It was probably something like 4-4.30 am when we packed up our chairs and headed back to the Arnage car park.  I wsn't particularly looking forward to the drive our to Mulsanne Corner bearing in mind how bad the traffic had been on the way to Arnage, but, as it turned out, it wasn't too bad, other than dodging those who had imbibed more than they probably should before walking long the unlit road as well as those teetering along on bicycles.  We would normally have stayed at Indianapolis until dawn, but decided to see dawn in instead at Mulsanne.  The car park was actually pretty empty when we arrived at around 5 am as the first glimmers of lighter blue appeared in the sky.

I'm no really sure why but the fairly long walk to the corner is always one of my favourite parts of the race weekend, walking along by the fencing and seeing the lights of the cars as they round the corner than hearing the sound as they accelerated past us.  Always worth a spot of video en route....

There were a decent number of people at the corner when we got there, but it was far from packed.  The best part was discovering the new extended viewing area further towards the roundabout than before which gave you some slightly different angles to photograph from, including a section where it was possible to shoot above the fencing.

I was pleased with some of the shots I managed to get at Mulsanne, largely the result of the improved viewing bank but if I'm honest I was shooting to stay awake.  From memory, I think Allon and Lauren may both have stayed in the car but I may be wrong about that.  At some point after 6 am, we decided to call it a day.  It has been our habit for many years now to nip back to base for a shower and a change of clothes and we saw no reason to change that routine, even if it was a bit earlier than usual.
