We left the grandstand
from the front exits instead of the rear one this time and from there we had a
gentle stroll along the front of the grandstands and then up towards the Dunlop
Curve where we stopped for a few minutes. I can't say I felt tired at this
point - about 8 pm by now - but I did need some exercise after that lengthy
stint on my backside in the grandstand!
Sadly I'd had
to resign myself to my fate with my camera which continued to malfunction freely
in the same way that it had done from the outset of free practice on Wednesday.
The good news though was that my new LowePro rucksack, also purchased in time
for Silverstone last year was really earning it's keep, not only looking after
my camera, but camcorder, headphones, a coat, water and all sorts of other bits
and pieces and it was just so much easier to carry than the shoulder bag I'd
always used in the past. I'd certainly recommend one of these bags to
anyone!
After a short
while watching by the side of the Dunlop grandstand we moved on past the bridge
and on down towards the Esses, taking my first photos from here just after 8.30
- five and a half hours into the race. The weather was still good with no
sign of any rain and still some watery sunshine. It was noticeable though
that it wasn't particularly warm for early evening at Le Mans, which suggested
that we might be in for a chilly night. I was glad that I also had a thick
pullover in that voluminous rucksack.....
At Le Mans
these days, for the savvy spectator, all roads lead to Tertre Rouge, and after
spending about a quarter of an hour overlooking the Esses, we continued our
gentle stroll down to the best viewing spot on the whole circuit - in my
opinion.
