Le Mans 2023 - Ayse's Story
Page 15 - Saturday 10th June - Time to Wander
We finally decided to make a move from the grandstand at about 8:45 pm at which point there was still a great battle going on at the front of the field with the first ten hypercars still on the same lap.
We left the stand and walked down behind the rest of the stands all the way down to the Porsche bridge and further on down to the top of the buildings from where we had spectated on Wednesday. We were all getting a bit hungry by now and started thinking about finding some food. Allon went off first in search of dinner and was soon followed by James. During our walk down and while standing up on the balcony the skies had got darker and darker and sure enough, the rain that had been threatening arrived necessitating a mad rush to get rain macs out and on before we got soaked as it started raining quite hard. This of course had all the cars dashing to the pits for wets. Fortunately (unlike earlier in the race) there were a few spins but no major incidents although one of the cars (I forget now which one) skittered off into the kitty-litter at the last part of the Porsche Curves - just up to our left - necessitating a slow zone while it was recovered.
After the rain started it was amazing how quickly the darkness of the night descended. I made my usual efforts to get photographs of the cars however although I was standing up on the roof of the buildings there I wasn't high enough to clear the ever-present debris fencing so many of the shots are spoiled as a result. But I've included them, nevertheless.
Although Allon managed to get something to eat, James gave up on his quest due to the lengthy queues and we decided that as all of the other eateries seemed to have large queues as well we would go back to the ACO cafe and try our luck there.
