As is my custom, I'm not
going to provide a blow by blow commentary on what happened in the race here
in my 'story' - there are plenty of other reports in the motor racing
magazines and on the internet; suffice to say that the Peugeots leapt away
in the lead of the race, a lead I fully expected them to maintain
throughout, although it was clear from an early stage that the Audis seemed
to be able to run much closer to them than their practice form had
suggested. The Autocon Lola failed to make it round the first lap; the
Jaguar was similarly woeful and Nigel Mansell's glorious return to the world
motor racing stage was also short-lived; all the ice-cream in the world
won't win you Le Mans.......
As usual, my stand (T34)
remained full only for half an hour or so, although with a front row place,
I didn't have to move this year to get down to look over as the first cars
made their pit stops. It was warm, but not scorchingly hot, although
the sun did make itself known as the afternoon wore on. After a couple
of hours, the stand was probably two-thirds empty but I had no reason to
leave. I was having fun, getting some nice shots and just enjoying the
fact that there were no time pressures, and no need to dash away to do
anything else.
So there we have the
first hour's worth of shots from the race......
