Le Mans 2019 - Ayse's Story
Page 14 - Saturday 15th June
' The Race is On '
Amid the customary pomp and ceremony, the race got under way at 3 pm as Charlene waved her flag before no doubt heading off to hospitality as the Toyotas set off in the lead with Conway setting a blistering pace in the #7, followed somewhat unexpectedly by the #3 Rebellion which got past the #8 Toyota early on. Conway set the highest average lap speed ever at Le Mans on the fourth lap. The #1 Rebellion didn't fare so well and had an unplanned pit stop, likely the result of a faulty tyre sensor which was reporting a deflation. After two hours the Toyotas were over a minute clear while the Dragonspeed BR1 was already out of contention after a variety of early woes. Signatech had the lead in LMP2 while the #63 Corvette was running just ahead of the 92 and 93 Porsches in GTEPro. Unsurprisingly perhaps, Dempsey-Proton were running well at the front of GTEAm.
After watching the first hour and a half of the race from T34, we left to walk around and under the track to meet up with my former Le Mans chums in Lagache. When we got there it took quite a while and plenty of waving from the tribunes up to them in the stand until they realised that they actually knew the chap in the silly hat who was waving at them! My four oldest Le Mans pals, Ian, Martyn, Alan and Jim all came down from the stand for a chat and a photo.
