Le Mans 2012 - Ayse's Story

Into the Night

I took my last shot at Tertre Rouge just before 11.30 when we decided it was time to stretch our legs and move on.  We walked on down to the hillock on the inside of the circuit on the run down from Dunlop and then walked up the inside of the track (actually the Bugatti circuit really), stopping off at the Espace Club for a revitalising coffee.  It was disappointing that the ACO had only provided quite small screens in the Espace Club, both for the live action and the timing.  You really would think that by now, if they wanted to treat their members really well, they would have made screens available that were actually large enough to be able to read the timing on!

We relaxed there for quite a while before the lure of the cars on the track proved too great.  We could hear them of course, but we needed to see them as well!  So we made our way back to the grandstand to watch some more pit action.  I see that my first shot there was timed at 1.29 am, so we were rapidly closing on the half way point of the race already.

We watched from the top of the grandstand for about 45 minutes.  For me, this has become one of those slightly strange Le Mans moments.  I suspect the truth is that we were all itching to get out to Arnage, but then again, the grandstand seats do offer a degree of comfort that you don't get out in 'the wilds', so it's a question of when the urge to move finally becomes irresistible.  That point came at around 2.15 when we left our seats to head back to the car for the long-awaited run out to Arnage.
